Scene Summaries Act 1 MACBETH

ACT 1, SCENE 1:

Characters: The three witches

Location: An open/desert place

Time: Unknown (before the end of the battle)

Events: The witches plan to meet again after the battle is over. They plan to meet Macbeth on the heath.

Quote: “Fair is foul, and foul is fair” – paradox

ACT 1, SCENE 2:

Characters: King Duncan, Malcolm, Donalbain, Lenox, Captian, Rosse and attendants.

Location: A camp near Forres

Time: Unknown (The battle is nearing it’s end or has finished)

Events: King Duncan asks for a report on the battle from a wounded soilder (Captian). Captian explains how Macbeth had killed the rebel leader Macdonwald, then (With Banquo) fought off an attack from the allied Norweigians and rebels. When Rosse arrives with Angus. He reports that Macbeth has taken the rebel Thane of Cawdor prisoner and executed him; transferring his title to Macbeth.

ACT 1, SCENE 2:

Characters: The three witches, Macbeth, Banquo, Angus

Location: A heath

Time:

Events: Witches meet upon the Heath after the battle, waiting for Macbeth. Witch 1 explains how she has been tormenting sailors. Banquo and Macbeth arrive and are greeted by the witches, who predict that Macbeth will be king. Banquo wants to know his fate also, and the witches tell him that his descendants will be kings but not himself. Macbeth is skeptical about their knowledge and questions the witches again, but they ‘vanish’ instead. Angus and Rosse enter and report that the Thane of Cawdor was a traitor and as a reward for his bravery, Macbeth will become the new Thane of Cawdor, just as the witches had predicted. Macbeth and Banquo realise that the witches could be telling the truth after all and  believe that they won’t have to work to fufill the witches predictions. Although Banquo warns Macbeth that the witches could be leading him to evil, Macbeth contemplates killing Duncan.

ACT 1, SCENE 4:

ACT 1, SCENE 5:

Characters: Lady Macbeth, Messenger, Macbeth

Location: Inverness. A room in Macbeth’s castle

Time: Unkown, after the battle and Macbeth’s meeting with the king.

Quote: “Look like the innocent flower But be serpent under’t

Events: Lady Macbeth reads a letter from her husband about the Witches’ predications, Thane of Cawdor’s title being transferred to him and the possibility of becoming king. Lady Macbeth’s is thrilled for her husband, yet skeptical he would have the “illness”(evil) to kill the king. A messenger reports to Lady Macbeth that the King will be staying  at their castle tonight, Lady Macbeth is quite jovial about this, but wishes to “unsex me here” so she will be able to act as a man for Macbeth becoming King. Lady Macbeth tries to convince her determination to trick Duncan into believing they have good intentions in order to murder him during the night.

SCENE 6:

Characters: Duncan, Malcolm, Donalbain, Banquo, Lenox, Macduff, Rosse, Angus, Lady Macbeth

Location: Macbeth’s castle

Time: Unknown, evening

Events: Duncan and Banquo are welcomed by Lady Macbeth who invites them warmly into their humble abode. Duncan questions Macbeth’s whereabouts.

Quote: ‘The air Nimbly and sweet recommends itself Unto our gentle senses’

SCENE 7:

Characters: ‘ ‘

Location: ‘ ‘

Time: ‘ ‘ Before dinner

Events: Macbeth is reconsidering killing Duncan until Lady Macbeth interrupts him arguing against this that he must not break his promise, act like a man and kill the king.

Quote: ‘I  have no spur To prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself And falls on the other’
